Exceptional selection of chocolates. They have great variety if you want to gift chocolates to anyone of any age. Also, all stuff is made locally. Additional tip they also make good coffee. The French roast, especially goes well with the pastries, while you're sitting inside in the cafe area or outside looking at the cure RO downtown.

This place is pretty sweet. All the chocolate is homemade, and they have various specials going on during the week. They have a wide selection of edibles depending on what you're looking for...their items are great for bridal parties, birthdays, showers, etc as everything is so customized. For example, they have chocolate strollers, cake toppers, Eiffel Towers, and shoes just to name a few items. Some of these I wouldn't dream of eating...would probably just keep them in plastic to look at!! Anyways, their coffee is good but not exceptional. I tried a cafe au lait and enjoyed it. Their tiramisu is average. The truffle selection is unique and impressive. All in all this place definitely satisfies chocolate cravings and is worth a visit.

I currently have 3 truffles staring me in the face on my desk at work. They were $2 a piece, how can you say no to homemade chocolate at $2 a piece?! Do I save them for a snack later on in the day? Do I eat them? Do I save any for my fiancé? Hmmmm....decisions decisions. Ok, I gave in and ate 1. White Chocolate DELICIOUSNESS! Melts in your mouth. When walking into this place I was a little overwhelmed. There is A LOT to choose from. No where near Dylan's Candy Bar, but still. I could never take my toddler here, that's for sure, oh heck who am I kidding, I could never take my fiancé here! I will be back again for my free truffle at check in - maybe the champagne one..or another white chocolate one...or maybe the espresso one.....

Came here specifically looking for a caffeine fix before shopping. The mocha, both hot and iced, are AMAZING. They use coffee ice cubes so that the coffee doesn't get watered down. Sampled some of the chocolates, including chocolate covered potato chips; also amazing! My favorite of everything was the violet macaroon. Seriously, don't miss out on that.

I absolutely LOVE this place! I always come here to get my weekly chocolate fix. The hot chocolate is great, however I'm not a huge fan of their coffee. The truffles are to die for, especially the Chocolate Raspberry Truffles. I wish they had a bigger selection of their French Macarons. Other than that it's perfect.

Love this little place. They have quality chocolate and drinks and the service is always nice, but it is a little pricey.

I could get a smack-down for this review. Gayle's hits all the sentimental buttons. I've been back many times. I had NOTHING that I've ever wanted to put into my mouth again. Their truffles are expensive and do not taste good. I had a dark chocolate raspberry truffle (my favorite kind of truffle) and my face just said it all... ick. I spat one of the truffles out (maybe the Michigan cherry one... so ridiculously sweet). It all looks better than it is. I hate that. It's like false advertising. I've got a serious sweet tooth, and if something resonates with me all of my dopamine is released in my nucleas accumbens and I'm just hooked. There's NOTHING that hit that spot for me. The staff is helpful enough, if not a little impatient with my inability to decide which expensive truffle I wanted. But when I went in to get some presents, they were cordial and got the job done. It survives because it's cute, the boxes are pink, and it's local. But it is not a good chocolatier. And it's really pricey. I can't figure out what I am paying for. Going by yelp's suggestions once again, "Meh, I've had better" is dead on for Gayle's.

How can I NOT adore a place that contains 2 of my favourite (and in one case beloved) words? I picked up a few treats at DTW on my way back to California. Counter service was friendly and helpful. They also had a very good choice of chocolates that pleased both my son and Gayle.

When I lived in Royal Oak, this store wasn't there. Thank Goodness! I wouldn't have been able to control myself if I could have walked there! I was flying out of the Detroit airport and found myself with extra time and in need of a little snack before my flight. I wandered across Gayle's shop in the terminal and was immediately drawn in by the colors and the fun decorating. Then I noticed I was in a gourmet chocolate shop!!!! Glory, glory, I was in heaven. Litte pink packages and a counter full of delicious looking truffles and dipped candies. Chocolate shoes in darling clear purses. I settled on just one truffle (which to be honest I will skip next time) and a small tin of tasting chocolates. I saved the tin for the plane and what a treat it was. The box contained 4 different kinds of chocolate from milk to darkest of dark. Four wafer thin squares represented each flavor and they were the perfect for getting the overall sense of each flavor and melting on your tongue. I actually dropped my tin and it fell in a part of the seat where no one could reach it. I spend my entire 4.5 hours to LA trying to get it. Finally after everyone got off, the flight attendants moved the seat row and grabbed it. I offered everyone a piece and they agreed that it was totally worth the trouble! If you find yourself in Royal Oak or in Detroit Metro's North Terminal, stop and get some of these treats. You'll be happy you did.

I have a major sweet tooth and this place does not help at all. Great truffles, all $2 each and lots of other goodies such as chocolate cashews and to many things to list. I think Godiva really has a competitor.

I can't do a visit to Detroit without a quick stop at Gayle's, especially if I am on Amtrak since the station is a spitting distance from the store. For this adventure, I remembered their selection of sugar-free candies which we'd be presenting to my grandfather who has diabetes. But that's not all. Besides the sweets, they also have a great coffee/espresso/other drink bar, some of which are made with their homemade chocolates. They also have a huge selection of treats that are bundled with other treats, perfect for bringing to a party or as a generic gift for any occasion.

I come in here almost every day. I moves to downtown royal oak nearly 4 months ago and this might be one of my favorite places. I think I may prefer bean and leaf, although not by much. They always give me funny looks when I get a latte though, since their focus is on the chocolate. I think they should feel more excited to have coffee drinkers in there, encourage porcelain mugs or something. If your there for a cup of joe be sure to bring cash though, there is a $5 minimum on credit card transactions.

Man, I can't believe I totally forgot about Gayle's. I haven't been there in years, but I rediscovered my love for their chocolate yesterday when I wandered in to find something for my parents' arrival from San Diego today. Gayle's has everything you could possibly think of made in chocolate. They have your regular chocolates (truffles, chocolate covered foods, etc), but they also specialize in really cool stuff like chocolate shoes, cars, computers, etc. You want it in chocolate? They most likely have it, which is super awesome. While there, I saw a pink chocolate limo, a milk chocolate lamborghini (which I will purchase for my dad for Father's Day next month), a chocolate bride and groom cake topper (which you wouldn't know was chocolate if it weren't in a chocolate shop), and a bunch of other really cool stuff. I'm really excited about the lamborghini in particular-I think my dad will love it (short backstory: when I was 2, he bought me a remote control lamborghini that we bonded over). My only disappointment was that they didn't have any milk chocolate almond bark. I got the feeling they never have it, which seems a little odd since it's so common. They have all sorts of other milk chocolate barks-peanut, cashew, and a white chocolate one with nuts and berries. They let me taste one with cashew, which was yummy and would've fooled my dad, but they were apparently out of it other than the samples. Bummer. I ended up picking out three truffles-one for me, and one for each parent. I got myself a pumpkin pie truffle. It was... interesting. I didn't like the chocolate with it. I don't think it went with the pumpkin pie filling (white chocolate probably would work better), and the filling was much too sweet for me. Plus being that I'm obsessed with anything and everything pumpkin pie flavored (especially actual pumpkin pie), it left me disappointed. Didn't really taste like pumpkin pie at all. I picked out a raspberry truffle for my mom and a mocha truffle for my dad. Now, because I LOVE sweets, I ended up eating both of them today (it's okay because I got them cupcakes as well, and knowing them, they wouldn't have eaten the chocolates after that). The mocha was really, really good. I would definitely get it again. The raspberry was decent, but not worth $2. The other thing I didn't like about Gayle's is the fact that I plunked down $6.75 for 3 truffles ($2 each + tax). A little too rich for my blood. All in all, I do really like Gayle's, and I will definitely go there again soon.

You are wowed with all of the wonderful Chocolate "Art Works" that are not just decorative, but are for sale. Their signature "piece" would definitely be the High Heel Shoes, and now they have a miniature version. (Their regular version is pretty much life-size.) But Gale's takes it a step further and offers an abundant seasonal themed chocolate creations. It's worth a visit just to "admire" the creations here. It's almost Thanksgiving Day, so they have a large turkey shaped chocolate accompanied by a bag of "stuffings" consisting of popcorn croutons to chocolate wishbones. $100 or was it $110? It's a great item to bring to a party. Enough of what you get wowed on the surface, and let me share you my secrets here. The chocolate bins are wonderful in terms of flavor. I like to grab a bag, but they are usually empty by the time I leave this place. :-). Another great aspect of this place is that they have great coffee and drinks. During this season, I like their Hot Caramel Apple Cider.

Royal Oak's Gayle's Chocolates is the place to go whether you're craving a chocolate dipped graham cracker or a cute and tasty gift for a friend. Located on Washington St. this haven of chocolate, Gayle's is a must when shopping in downtown Royal Oak. this gem offers truffles, molded chocolates(I bought some cute chocolate tennis rackets), as well as a coffee bar-try the frozen hot chocolate, delicious. Obviously these chocolate treasures are gonna cost you, I purchased a box of 8 truffles for Mother's Day and it was about 15 bucks. Yet compared to Godiva, I suppose it's not terribly expensive and its definitely worth it. Everything that I've sampled or chowed down on religiously(chocolate graham crackers) has been phenomenal. In addition, Gayle's offers some tasty coffee drinks, so if you're not a huge chocolate lover, grab a caramel cappuccino. I have to say though, that the services isn't impeccable and the staff on several occasions has seemed a little jaded, maybe they're high from the permeating coco smell. Nevertheless, Gayle's offers some great gifts and snacks to nosh on. So whether you're depressed and need a little anti-depressant action via chocolate or just have a craving for some creamy chocolate goodness, Gayle's should remedy your issue.

What can be said about Gayle's? It's pretty much the perfect chocolate shop. They stock just about any candy or sweet you can think of, and cover it in their delicious chocolate. I've been here many times, and tried something new each time, and I still haven't been disappointed. I bought my girlfriend a chocolate high heel, which came in a clear purse as an added treat. She loved it so much she didn't touch it for days because she didn't want to ruin it; we bit into it eventually and to our surprise, the shoe (which was tastefully colored pink with dark chocolate accents) was strawberry flavored white chocolate, something I've never experienced before, and we loved it. If you love chocolate, make Gayle's your one-stop shop. P.S., Try the chocolate covered oreos, their quite possibly the best chocolate covered sweet in the store!

Went to Gayle's today. Had heard this was the place to get a great cup of hot chocolate as well as anything else chocolate. My daughter was in town and wanted to treat her to something special. I had read reviews and heard complaints of bad service. They were correct. We certainly got the feeling we were interupting their day. As far as the hot chocolate, both of us agreed it was the worst hot chocolate we had ever tasted - more like warm milk. We let the staff know that there was very little chocolate taste. New cups were prepared for us - it was much better - but still far short of a good cup of hot chocolate. Very grainy. Will not return.

I stopped in Gayle's the other day and loved it! I'm a girly girl so this place is extra cute to me. You feel really comfortable as soon as you hit the door. The service is welcoming and the air smells of what else? Chocolate goodies. You can get just about any thing chocolate your heart desires. Reasonable priced too! I suggest (like the other two reviews) the truffles. Delicious! They make the perfect gift too. They've got all sorts of gift boxes for your goodies as well; making it a great treat for someone or if you happen to stop in to enjoy the afternoon.

Excellent local shop! I was walking to Starbucks and decided to give Gayles a try. Got 2 small fresh roasted lattes for $5 and chocolate almonds $20/lb. Customer service was fantastic! She offered to write a love note on the 2nd cup and was genuinely friendly. I will definitely be going to Gayles anytime I'm in Royal Oak and want a coffee or chocolates. Great local business!

MALTITOL SWEETENED CHOCOLATES!!! For those of you that do not have a sensitivity to cane sugar and corn derived sugars, this most likely means nothing. To me, someone with a sugar sensitivity that virtually had to cut any form of dessert out of my life, this means EVERYTHING! No aspartame or splenda crap, just good chocolate that won't totally destroy your blood sugar! Gayle's is truly a breath of fresh air for anyone who cannot eat sugar. Sugar free items I have tried and thoroughly enjoyed: choc. covered almonds, dark choc. covered coconut, peanut butter cups, and choc. caramel balls.

I stopped by this shop looking for some sweet treats but was a little put off by the some of them in boxes available for purchase. Dare I say they looked a little ... stale? The chocolate wasn't smooth. I don't know if it wasn't made/packaged the proper way or what, but it definitely made me not want to buy anything. I was feeling bad about my decision to just leave so I thought I'd buy something to drink. The girl behind the counter recommended the chai tea latte, and man, that was one great cup of chai! I didn't even know they sold drinks, so that was a nice surprise. This also saved them from getting docked another star. Hoping the chocolate thing is an isolated incident.

When I don't know what to get someone for a gift, I generally go with an assorted truffle box from Gayle's. It's local and who doesn't love chocolate? No one can deny Gayle's is really tasty chocolate. I usually stick with the classic and the nut flavors. I stopped by here during the metal/clay show and ordered a chocolate malt. It was amazingly smooth and tasted like liquid chocolate. It could have been slightly more malty but really, I'm a malt addict so for normal people I'm sure it was good enough.

Umm I can't give anything other than a one star for bigotry. I don't care how good your product is, I can't recommend a place that has prejudice staff. So I went into Gayle's to get iced drinks after dinner, I come in and there is a young lady with a pixie cut and glasses at the counter right at the door, greeting people as they walked in and offering samples of chocolate, completing ignoring me and a girlfriend. Whatever, didn't think anything of it, didn't want chocolate anyways and she was already talking to two women. So I make my way to the counter where the coffee drinks are and placed an order with a young blonde lady. She was a friendly girl and gave recommendations on flavored syrups. So ok, I'm getting ready to pay, and here is pixie cut (let's call her that for now, I didn't get her name and she comes up a lot) is now at this counter, ringing up someone. She's done ringing them up, and could have rang us up, but didn't. Didn't acknowledge us again. Ok now I'm a bit peeved, you're the only person, at the only pay station, and should have just rang me up. The other lady was making our drinks. So the other lady comes back with our drinks and had to ring us because pixie cut couldn't be bothered to do it. Again, whatever, because employees are people and can have bad days. We tasted our drinks, they are good, so we are heading out to meet our other girlfriends. Now while sitting and chatting with the girls, I started checking in on yelp to the places I visited tonight. While checking into Gayle's a voucher for a free truffle comes up. Gayle's is on my way back to our car, so I was going to stop by on my way back. I stop by, and both women are still there, the friendly one was occupied with some sort of clean up, so I went to pixie cut. Smiled at her, explained I had the voucher, and showed it to her. She just awkwardly looked at me and we went to the truffle counter. I'm deciding on a flavor, while pixie cut absent mindedly stands there, and I pick one. (All the while, the young blonde woman is recommending things and talking to us, FROM THE OTHER SIDE of the store.) So pixie cut just picks up the truffle, and drops it in my hand. No wax paper. No box. Nothing. Just a truffle. I'm confused by this because she could have wrapped it in something, every quality place, has paper/box/bag to put treats in, no matter how small. AGAIN, Whatever. She could be having an off day. BUT WHAT DROVE ME TO THIS REVIEW WAS two women came in as I was getting ready to leave, and pixie cut went FULL SMILE, COMPLETELY ACKNOWLEDGED THEM, offered them samples, and suggested things to try, and even followed them around the store HELPING THEM. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. you aren't having a bad day pixie cut, you are just a bigot. I don't recommend. I'm sorry I'm not white enough for you, but I will not be returning. I won't pay good money to be treated with ignorance.

I love Gayle's. You really can't go wrong with chocolate, it's just not possible. They have unique interesting sweets. I do think they could bring their prices down a bit. It's a little expensive. They carry AMAZING (as in the best I've ever had) macarons from Pinwheel Bakery (in Ferndale). These macarons make you feel like you died, went to heaven, then the macarons brought you back to life again. They are the perfect texture, and even the flavors I don't like I would chose over other local maracrons. That being said the Dulce de Leche is my favorite (I've still got my fingers crossed they will make a nutella one soon!). Make sure you check in for your free truffle (I got the peanut butter one, it was amazing!).

I feel bad for Pizzeria Fellini's next door, because these guys are eating their lunch. I of course passed on dessert there to grab chocolates here. Great call. The truffles are awesome, but the peanut butter cups are okay. I like that they have a coffee/chocolate combo drink (not just a mocha). The star of the show was the sea salt chocolate cookies. I am generally not a fan of salt, but I could hardly taste it on the cookie. The best part is that the cookie is bursting with chocolate. All in all, I ended up spending over $20 there, but I had enough chocolate to get through the week (with a bit of self-control). I shall be back.

Good thing there are quite a few dentists on Washington Avenue. Just thinking of the chocolate selection at Gayle's makes my molars ache. I especially fancy strolling in here with my perfectly pressed pink tutu and glimmering tiara after lunch or dinner to grab a dark chocolate graham cracker and a coffee or tea -- any other regalia doesn't feel suitable in this magical candy land. The frosty pink walls with flicks of minty green accents and friendly staff add to the sweetness, but if you're planning on buying a gift or custom order here, bring your sugar daddy or mama. The price tags can go from reasonable to high-end quickly.

Gayle's doesn't disappoint. The chocolate is prime and you won't have to partake of a delicious goodie with the fear of that waxy after-taste from your "made in a van, down by the river" chocolate. I

TOO much way too too much. The price is a killer. It's like your buying gold. Everyone needs to make a living but WOW. I used to buy Gayle's for my client but I just can't justify the money. The stuff is good not question, lot to choice from, but the price you got to be kidding.

If I was to review by sight alone I'd give this place 5 stars. Everything is uber-cute and girly girl like for those princesses and sex-in-the-city loving girls (you can buy a chocolate pump). They also take the time and resources to package your truffles a-la-carte in individual plastic boxes. Great service. The problem was when I bit into the chocolate. I generally like milk chocolate over dark and I enjoy nuts and caramels. My favorite chocolate truffle is the champagne. I decided to try the Cleopatra (milk with Michigan cherries) and a champagne truffle. The second the chocolate hit my mouth I knew one thing, this is some rich stuff. The mouthfeel was creamy. The chocolate taste? I'm not sure I tasted it. I felt like I was eating a really dark piece of white chocolate. Even still it didn't taste like white chocolate usually does. Perhaps I was just eating a hunk of butter? Gayle you're probably good for a gift for a non-chocolate connoisseur but you're not cutting it for me! I'm not fooled by exterior packaging.

There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate. Gayle's is your Royal Oak friend who always has cocoa bonbons in her cupboard and something special and beautifully wrapped in pink paper for a special occasion. The shop is a fully fledged chocolateria: shelves groan under chocolate-dipped nuts, pretzels, and sweets, bags of chocolate bites adorn seasonal displays, and the display cases carry truffles and individual pieces across a gustatory spectrum. Feel like a hot, spicy Mexican chocolate or a cool mint confection that melts in your mouth? There's a full range of options. The breezy entrance way beckons you in, especially when the wind brings a scent of cocoa and butter floating down Washington Avenue. Mmm, just follow your nose like the Toucan says into a divine rose pink and dark wood candybox holds the remedy for all that ails you. Truffles are their prime selling point, and they do a lot of dark chocolates with high cocoa content, the way I prefer them. Milk chocolate and white chocolate are also abundant in their many gift boxes, along with marshmallow confections, brittle and candied goodness all around. But given Gayle's name, their strongest suit are really their chocolate-doused bonbons and the originals still earn their reputation. In the dead of winter, the coffee and cocoa bar is the main attraction for me.What beats a piping hot cup of molten chocolate doused by a splash of milk and a dollop of whipped cream. A shot of syrup for flavour can make a tasty getaway from the everyday hot chocolate. Their chais and their coffee products are also pretty good, a nice way to change up the routine. I consider these a sometimes treat, though, because the cocoa gets almost cloyingly sweet at times. The prices are pretty good. The Italian sodas and French sodas are delicious to cool down a hot day. Gayle's is a pretty place, but I have quibbles with the speed of service and the hodgepodge way that customers in a line are addressed. My last trip there before Christmas, not exactly the busiest day ever, four of us waited in a neat line at the coffee bar. The guy behind the counter was making drinks while two young women were attending on the rest of us. One flittered around a bit aimlessly and the other was getting chocolates wrapped up for the next person in line. Out of nowhere comes this bossy lady in a coat who demands that she be served, getting a bunch of chocolates, some purchases, and help finding a sale item. We were all in line and looked politely at her, waiting for the flittering girl to say she was helping the next person in line or pointing out others were waiting. Didn't happen. She looked a bit lost and started in, and the lady doing the wrapping went into the backroom after fulfilling that order. We waited about 10 minutes before I got up to the counter for a cocoa, and the only reason I was staying put was because I promised the beau I'd pick him up a cup. Definitely frustrating there, and it's not the first instance I've seen of service needing a bit of improvement.

I used to be a wholesale account for Gayle's in the early 2000's when I ran the gourmet department at Jacobson's in Laurel Park. I always thought that Gayle's was a pretty brand, with lots of creative items, like the Junk Food Tin, which is a small garbage pail filled with a candy concoction of pretzels, potato chips, Oreo bits, graham cracker bits, etc., that is covered in chocolate. The chocolates themselves are a little dry, not alot of creamy mouth feel.

I picked up a couple of truffles from Gayle's at DTW while waiting for a flight. The white chocolate truffle was delicious. The milk chocolate chocolate lacked sweetness and silkiness IMO. Truffles are tough... hard to balance flavors.

I have been visiting Gayles since I was in elementary school. They have great chocolates that are made on the premises. You can really tell that they love chocolate and know how happy it makes people They have everything chocolate related here...chocolate covered (insert many a different thing here), chocolates in the shape of bowling pins (and other whimsical molded chocolates)....etc etc. I truly believe that they have some of the best truffles that have ever hit my lips. I have traveled to many cities...tasted many chocolates...and Gayle's truffles beat them all. Godiva...Ghirardelli...Gayles's is the best.
